gallery 5619 Presents
a Unique Look at the Lives of Sioux People
I AM HUMAN. I AM SPIRIT is an immersive exhibition of photography, sound clips, and narrative that explores the lives of the Sioux Indians of Montana. For two years, writer Trevor Boehm and photographer Kara Payne worked with the members of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in northeast Montana, engaging, listening, and photographing the tribes’ most respected, and possibly last full-blooded members, including four elders. The resulting work, reminiscent of James Agee and Walker Evans’ seminal work, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, is a revealing, intimate, and fascinating look into a historically significant, even prophetic people. The exhibition opens to the public with a reception on Saturday, June 19th from 7 – 10 PM and runs through August 29, 2010. Read more

Still Things
An exhibition of New Work by Debra Broz
September 17 - October 31, 2010
Gallery 5619 presents Still Things, an exhibition of mixed media sculptural works by artist Debra Broz. The exhibition opens to the public with a reception on Friday, September 17 from 7 – 10 PM and runs through October 31, 2010.
In her new series, Broz delicately assembles found objects (stones, envelopes, thread, sewing notions, and book parts and covers) in an effort to explore the fine line between the ordinary and the strange. Seeking the gesture that links familiarity and the unexpected, she examines the relationships between fragments: connections between words, ideas, processes and materials. Broz states, "Every object I work with has its own history within its form. I attempt to access this history, to unlock the memory of the object. I often work with small things, things that have passed through many hands, recreating the intimacy that occurs between object and individual. The title "still things" says something to me about how an inanimate object still has power in its history and memory- and how these things can speak to us through their anthropological connotations."
The artist's use of many "feminine" materials is remniscent of the 1970s craft aesthetic of Miriam Schaprio and Judy Chicago, but realized in a completely contemporary fashion. Her compositions have a contemplative, delicate resonance to them, but convey strong psychological and emotional undercurrents.
Broz has exhibited at Women and Their Work, Arthouse, and other venues, and has an upcoming solo exhibition at Birdhouse Gallery (Austin) this fall. Currently an editor and contributing writer for Cantanker Magazine, she is also a professional restorer of porcelain, china and other pottery.
